Author: Wincenty Slendziński (1837–1909)

Painter Wincenty Slendziński, the son of artist Aleksander Slendziński and the father of painter Ludomir Slendziński, was born on 2 January 1837 in Skrebinai, Jonava district. He learned thefoundations of art from both his father and from K. Ruseckas. In 1856–1863 he attended the school of painting, sculpture and architecture in Moscow. In 1856–1861 he participated in the exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. In 1863 he was deported to Russia for his participation in the uprising and lived in Nizhny Novgorod, Kniaginin and Kharkov. It was while in exile in 1867 that the St. Petersburg Academy of Art bestowed on him the title of an independent artist.  In 1872 he received permission to return from exile, and livedat his brother’s house in Cracow. After some time he left for Dresden, but in 1875 he was detained for illegally crossing theAustrian-Hungarian border and wasexiled to Kharkov. In 1883 he received permission to return, and settled in Vilnius. He painted portraits, everyday scenes, historical pictures, landscapes, imagesof Vilnius and religious pictures for churches. He died on 19 August 1909 in Vilnius.
