Jonas Mackevičius, a painter, was born on 18 June 1872 in Raguva, Panevėžys district. In 1884 his family left for Russia and he lived and studied in Tver. In 1893 he entered the Tenishev School of Art in St. Petersburg and later attended the School of the Association for the Promotion of Art and I. Repin’s private art studio. In 1901 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and took lessons from V. Makovskij and P. Kovalevskij. In 1909 he became a member of the A. Kuindzhi Association of Russian Artists and lived in the Crimea. He further supplemented his knowledge in Germany, France, Italy and Spain and participated in the primary exhibitions of Lithuanian art. He was a member of the Lithuanian Fine Arts Society. While travelling in Europe he mastered his painting skills. In 1914 he settled in Italy, in Capri. He returned to Lithuania in 1929 and taught drawing at an art school in Kaunas. In 1924 and 1926 he held personal exhibitions of paintings. In 1944 he moved to Switzerland. He died on 25 July 1954 in Roveredo.
