Painter Adolf Czapski was a descendant of the Czapskis’ Lithuanian line, whose patrimony was Kėdainiai. At first he went to school in Vilnius, then in 1828 – the Piarist School in Warsaw. When the Piarist School was dissolved, he attended a general school in Berlin, which he finished in 1832. A. Chapski studied painting at the Berlin Academy of Art under H. Hintz and H. Kamer. During 1836–1839 his landscapes were exhibited in the Berlin Academy of Art. In 1843 A. Chapski took part in the Russian Army’s march to the Caucasus. In the middle of the XIX century he settled in Lithuania and in 1848 he was elected the noblemen’s marshal of Telšiai district. In 1855 he was elected the noblemen’s marshal of Kaunas district. A. Chapski married Stanisława, the daughter of Hipolit and Barbara Gorski, and as a dowry, he received the Beržėnai estate in Samogitia. Nowadays, A. Chapski’s art is mostly known for his graphic reproductions (Zoo near Vilnius, Kaunas landscape).
