Mstislav Dobuzhinsky was a famous Russian scenographer, graphic artist and painter. He was born on 15 August 1875 in Novgorod. In 1895 he finished the Second Men’s Gymnasium in Vilnius. After graduating from St. Petersburg University where he studied law (1899), he went to Munich to study art under A. Azbè and S. Hollósy. Upon his return to Lithuania, he and his family lived in Alytus and Vilnius. Later he mastered his skills in graphics at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art under V. Mate. In St. Petersburg he joined the artists’ group Mir iskusstva (The World of Art), produced scenic designs for performances, painted cycles of various city-scapes and illustrated books. When he returned to Lithuania in 1929, he began to supervise the Studio of Graphics and Decorative Arts at the Kaunas Theatrical School and in 1930–1933 he opened his private art studio. He created scenography for 38 plays: dramas, operas and ballets at the State Theatre. In 1939 he left for London to prepare for a personal exhibition of his works, and when the war broke out, he was unable to return to Lithuania. At first he lived in Paris and then immigrated to the USA. He died in New York on 20 November 1957. His remains were buried in Paris.
