Stasys Eidrigevičius is a graphic artist, painter, set designer, illustrator, poster designer and photographer. He also creates events and performances (the first one was in 1992). He was born on 24 July 1949 in the village of Mediniškiai, in the Panevėžys district. He attended the Kaunas Stepas Žukas High School of Applied Art between 1964 and 1968, and studied painting and graphic art in the Pedagogical Faculty of the State Art Institute of Lithuania from 1968 to 1973. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1970. He took part in the Sixth Bookplate Biennale in Malbork, Poland, in 1973, just after completing his studies, and won a Medal of Honour. He settled in Warsaw in 1980, and took Polish citizenship in 1996. He has held more than 100 solo exhibitions all over the world, including Lithuania (he had a major exhibition in Vilnius in 2011). He has also illustrated about 40 books, mostly books for children. His main spheres are painting, graphic art, photography, performances, installations, sculptural objects, masks, and cinema and theatre. His posters and book illustrations are the best-known side of his work. The main themes in his work are loneliness, alienation and sorrow. Eidrigevičius has won more than 40 international awards, including several top prizes and gold medals, and three Medals of Honour. He won the Lithuanian Prize for National Culture and Art in 2001. In 2000 he was awarded the 4th Degree Order of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. A museum about Eidrigevičius, the Hiroko Mori & Stasys Museum, has opened in the city of Otaru in Japan. The filmmaker Jacques Debs based a film on him.
