Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887), who is better known as a famous literary figure of the Romantic Age, was a well-educated, talented and versatile person. He wrote poetry, and hundreds of short stories and narratives, historical texts, translations from French, English, Latin, German and Italian, and thousands of letters. He was famous as a journalist, took a professional interest in archaeology, played the piano, composed music, and could also draw and paint. He acquired the basics of his art education at Vilnius University. He drew views of Poland, Lithuania and Byelorussia. As a typical Romantic, he was drawn by the Orient, although he only knew about it from books and pictures painted by other artists.
