Author: Mečislovas Bulaka (1907–1994)

A painter, graphic artist, illustrator and teacher, Mečislovas Bulaka was born on 12 September 1907 in Kapčiamiestis, in the Lazdijai district of Lithuania. He studied graphic art and stage design at art school until 1931. From 1938 to 1940 he studied at Kaunas University, and in 1944 he graduated from Vilnius Art Institute. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1931. He was appointed Chairman of the Artists’ Association of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1940, and taught at Vilnius School of Art. In 1944, he became director of Vilnius Art Institute, and was appointed associate professor. He lectured at the institute from 1944 to 1951. Between 1952 and 1954 he was a lecturer at Vilnius University. Between 1954 and 1960, he worked as an artist at the Lithuanian Film Studios. He painted landscapes, worked on book design and illustration, and made fine art prints, bookplates and posters. His main areas were film and theatre. He died on 12 October 1994 in Vilnius.
