Author: Marija Cvirkienė (1912–2004)

Marija Cvirkienė was a painter, and the wife of the writer Petras Cvirka. She was born on 28 October 1912 in Bolgrade, Moldavia, and came to Lithuania in 1921. She studied painting at Kaunas School of Art under Petras Kalpokas and Adomas Galdikas from 1930 to 1935. Between 1941 and 1944 she took refuge in the USSR. She painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes and figure compositions. Her works are impressionistic, intimate and lyrical, exuding warmth, beauty and light, painted with sensitively vibrant light brushstrokes, and with rich and translucent colours. She began to participate in exhibitions in 1935, and held solo exhibitions in Kaunas (1962), Vilnius (1964, 1984, 1992, 1997), Budapest (1980), Bratislava (1981) and Ancona (Italy, 1981). In 1965 she was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of Lithuania, and in 1972 the title of Lithuanian Folk Artist. She was awarded the 5th Class Order of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania in 2000. She died on 19 June 2004 in Vilnius.
