The painter Jonas Čeponis was born on 2 April 1926 in Gaveikėnai, in the Ignalina district. He graduated from the State Art Institute of Lithuania in 1951. From 1977 to 1980 he lectured at the Vilnius Engineering and Construction Institute, and from 1980 to 1988 he was a lecturer and professor (1988) at the State Art Institute of Lithuania. He held solo exhibitions in Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Germany and the USA. In 1976 he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of Lithuania, and in 1984 he won the Lithuanian State Award. He painted mostly views of Vilnius and country landscapes. His works are expressive, with rich and bright contrasting colours. Čeponis’ work was deeply influenced by Fauvism. He died on 7 January 2003 in Vilnius.
