A painter, teacher and actor, Leonas Katinas was born on 6 September 1907 at Ampolis, in the Utena district. He completed his studies at Panevėžys Teacher Training College in 1930, and the next year he enrolled as a second-year student at Kaunas Military School. Between 1933 and 1935, he studied at Kaunas School of Art. He began to show works in exhibitions in 1932. He moved to Radviliškis in 1940. Between 1941 and 1945, he was an actor with the Šiauliai Drama Theatre. He studied painting at Vilnius Art Institute under Antanas Gudaitis from 1945 to 1948, and between 1947 and 1951 he worked as a lecturer at the institute. He lectured at the State Art Institute of Lithuania from 1951 to 1974, and in 1969 he became an associate professor. He painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits and compositions. He held a solo exhibition in Vilnius in 1983. Posthumous exhibitions of his work have been held in Vilnius (1995, 1997, 2005) and Klaipėda (2000). Some of his works were acquired by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, and foreign museums. He died on 18 February 1984 in Vilnius.
