Vincas Kisarauskas was a versatile artist, a painter, graphic artist, set designer, monumentalist, art historian and teacher. He was born on 1 March 1934 in the village of Augmėnai, near Baisogala. He studied ceramics at Telšiai School of Fine Arts between 1949 and 1953. In 1959 he graduated from the State Art Institute of Lithuania, where he studied painting, and began to take part in exhibitions. He held solo exhibitions in Vilnius (1961, 1976, 1981, 1984), Denmark, Byelorussia and Poland. He participated in group exhibitions in Malbork, Krakow, Osaka, Nancy and Riga. Between 1962 and 1965 he worked as an artist for the Vilnius Fashion House, and between 1965 and 1988 he was a teacher at the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts. He painted historical and mythological compositions, portraits and landscapes, created bookplates, prints, illustrations for books, medals and mosaics, and designed sets for numerous plays and films. He differs from other Lithuanian artists in his inclination towards constructive compositions, dramatic and deformed shapes full of tension, his use of contrasting colouring and collage, and his liking for historical, Antique and biblical themes. In 1984, he published the book Lietuvos knygos ženklai 1518–1918 (Lithuanian Bookplates and Logos, 1518–1918). Works by Kisarauskas are held by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, and museums in Poland, France, Russia and the USA. He died on 27 October 1988 in New York, and is buried in Vilnius.
