In the bathhouse
Author: | Stasys Jusionis (b. 1927) |
The painter Stasys Jusionis was born on 24 August 1927 in Radviliškis. Between 1947 and 1950, he studied at Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts. He graduated from the State Art Institute of Lithuania (his supervisor for his diploma work was I. Trečiokaitė-Žebenkienė) in 1953, and the same year began to participate in exhibitions. Between 1953 and 1989, he worked on the staff of the magazine Genys (from 1974 he was its editor-in-chief). He joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1957.
Jusionis has had more than ten solo exhibitions, in Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai and Panevėžys. He has participated in exhibitions of work by Lithuanian artists in Germany, Italy, Russia, Latvia and Estonia. He creates topical compositions and portraits, but his main theme has always been landscape. He likes to paint the change of the seasons in nature. His paintings highlight spontaneous and elemental genesis. His works are expressive, the colours are bright and contrasting, and the texture of thick layers of paint makes the colouring dynamic, as the shapes and the colours change according to the lighting.
Works by Jusionis have been acquired by art museums in Lithuania and Russia, and by private collectors. In 1977, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of Lithuania, and in 1981 he won the Lithuanian State Award.
