Vytautas Kasiulis was a painter, graphic artist and teacher. He was born on 23 April 1918 in Simnas (according to other sources, he was born in the city of Yukchnovo, in the Smolensk district of Russia). He entered Kaunas School of Art in 1937. He completed his painting studies in 1941 in the Studio of Decorative Art at Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, under Stasys Ušinskas. For the next two years, he was a lecturer in the Studio of Decorative Art and participated in its exhibitions. He held his first solo exhibition in 1943, and in the same year he left for Vienna to study for a year. He never returned to Lithuania. After the war, from 1946 to 1948, he lectured on decorative painting at Freiburg School of Fine Arts and Crafts. He settled in Paris in 1948, and in 1949 he had a solo exhibition at the Raymond Duncan Gallery. He collaborated with the M. Stiebel Gallery in the 1950s, which bought and displayed his works. During the period 1946 to 1959, he held more than 20 solo exhibitions in various European countries. In Paris he had his own art salon, where he sold his own and other artists’ works. He died on 12 March 1995 in Paris. He bequeathed his work to the Lithuanian Art Museum.
