Motherhood

Author: William Zorach (1887–1966)

William (Gorfinkel) Zorach (b. 1887 Jurbarkas – d. 1966 Bath, USA) Was the eighth of ten children. The family were poor, and in 1891 they emigrated to America. Zorach studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York. He spent a couple of years from 1910 in Paris, where Cubism and Fauvism influenced his work. After returning to the USA, he settled in New York. Between 1929 and 1960 he taught at the Art Students League in New York, and wrote several books on American sculpture. Art critics consider Zorach to be one of the first people to introduce modern trends in European art into American art. He created paintings, watercolours and lithographs, but made his name with his wood, stone and marble figures. His sculptures stand in squares, fountains and parks in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Bath, Omaha, St Louis, Lincoln, Madison, and other American cities, as well as in Israel.
