A painter, graphic artist and set designer, Vaclovas Kosciuška was born on 21 January 1911 in the town of Geranainiai, in the Lida district of Byelorussia. He completed his studies in stage design at Kaunas School of Art in 1935. Between 1936 and 1940, he studied painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began to show his work at exhibitions in 1940. He was a lecturer at Vilnius Art Institute from 1947 to 1953. He was a skilful painter of battlefield compositions, colourful and decorative still lifes, and poetic landscapes. He designed stage sets, illustrated books, and produced posters, bookplates, medals and leather articles. He also worked in church art and photography. Kosciuška was a romantic artist, who cared about Lithuania’s destiny and the preservation and nurturing of the national identity during difficult times. He glorified the native land, and idealised its people in his art. In his landscapes, he expressed the beauty of the homeland, and liked to paint legendary scenes. He died on 1 November 1984 in Vilnius. An exhibition of his work was held at the Lithuanian Art Museum in 2011.
