Author: Steponas Varašius (1894–1982)

Steponas Varašius was a painter and watercolourist. He was born on 1 September 1894 in the town of Tytuvėnai (Kelmė district). In 1914 he attended the Theological Seminary in Kaunas. In 1920–1924 he attended drawing courses in Kaunas and studied at the Kaunas School of Art under A. Varnas and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. In 1945–1947 he studied at Kaunas Conservatoire. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1926 (Salon de Paris). He painted in the realistic and academic manner: oil and watercolour portraits and landscapes, copied classic works displayed in Louvre and the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and opened an exhibition of the copies in Kaunas (1930). Although, he had perfectly mastered painting techniques and was distinguished as a good drawer, he failed to develop an artistic individuality. He died on 11 February 1982 in Kaunas.
