Viktoras Vizgirda was a painter, teacher, scenographer, organiser of the artistic life, book illustrator and critic. He was born on 14 January 1904 on a homestead in Domininkoniai, Garliava rural district. In 1920 he attended High Courses of Drawing. In 1923–1926 he finished the Kaunas School of Art and attended J. Vienožinskis’ studio of painting. In 1926–1927 he received a state grant for a one-year studies’ programme in Paris. He attended the Academy of André Lhote, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and the drawing studio of V. Shukhayev. He was member of the Independent Artists’ Group, the Ars Group, and participated in their exhibitions. In 1928–1932 he taught drawing in the Gymnasium of Raseiniai and later in Pagėgiai and in the Kaunas School of Crafts. In 1936–1938 he was chairman of the Lithuanian Painters’ Association. In the fourth decade of the XX century he travelled in Europe. In 1940–1941 he moved to Vilnius and in 1941–1943 he was director of the Vilnius Academy of Art. In 1944 he left Lithuania and in 1946–1949 he lectured on painting at the Freiburg School of Applied Art. In 1950 he took up residence in Boston, the USA. His personal exhibition was opened in 1966 in the Lithuanian Museum of Art – the first exhibition in Soviet Lithuania of a Lithuanian emigrant. He died on 10 July 1993 in Cape Cod, USA, and was buried in Vilnius.
