Czesław Znamierowski, a painter, was born on 23 May 1890 in Zatišje, Ludza region (Latvia). In 1912–1914 he attended the drawing school of the Arts Promotion Society in St. Petersburg, and in 1915–1917 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1920 in Latvia. During 1921–1926 he was a member of the Latvian Artists’ Society. In 1926 he moved to Vilnius and studied at the Art department of Vilnius Stephen Bathory University. He graduated from the university in 1929. He was a member of the Vilnius Independent Painters’ Association and in 1929, 1936, 1954, 1962 and 1970 held personal exhibitions in Vilnius. In 1965 he was bestowed the title of Artist Emeritus of Soviet Lithuania. He painted mostly landscapes, but also produced portraits, still-life pictures and daily life compositions. He died on 9 August 1977 in Vilnius.
