A currant bush
Author: | Silvija Drebickaitė (1957–2020) |
Silvija Drebickaitė was born on 11 March 1957 in Šiauliai. She studied monumental art at the State Art Institute of Lithuania between 1975 and 1980, learning mostly from Sofija Veiverytė, Leopoldas Surgailis and Kazys Morkūnas. In 1983, she became a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association. She paints pictures and frescoes, and makes stained glass and mosaics. She won a competition to make a stained glass window for the chapel of the Vasario 16-osios Gymnasium in Heidelberg in Germany. Apart from Classical art, she is inspired by Impressionism, Japanese prints and the works of Giorgio de Chirico. Nature is a source of material for her, but she likes to paint in the studio as well, because the solution of artistic problems also matters to her. She seeks to achieve an internal brightness in her pictures, ‘assonance’ of colours, and emotionality of brushstrokes. Drebickaitė favours thin multi-layered painting, and uses the scumble technique, thus creating an impression of transparency.
