A white mountain
Author: | Rūta Katiliūtė (b.1944) |
The painter Rūta Viktorija Katiliūtė was born on 15 March 1944 in Marijampolė. She completed her studies in stained glass at the State Art Institute of Lithuania in 1968, and the next year began to participate in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. Between 1977 and 2005, she held 26 solo exhibitions in the Baltic States and Western Europe. She has produced several monochromatic abstract pictures and cycles. She usually uses the colour blue, examining the limits of its expressiveness. Various shades and nuances of one colour produce a mesmerising impression of expanse and light, and an illusion of depth. The pictures are greenish-blue, containing hints of symbolic landscapes and images from folk art. Her large abstract compositions, painted spontaneously with a thin layer of paint, are intimate, lyrical and harmonious. In her other cycles, the range of colours may vary from rich blue to combinations of grey or yellowish white. Katiliūtė also produces drawings and installations (Playing with Kandinsky, 1995). Between 1997 and 2001, she devised 14 educational programmes for children at the Lithuanian Art Museum. She has received grants from various foreign foundations, such as Gastatelier des Kunstlerhauses (Salzburg, 1989), Pollock-Krasner (USA, 1994), Golart-Stiftung (Germany, 1996), and Düsseldorf and Munich departments of culture (Germany, 1993, 1996). Works by Katiliūtė have been acquired by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the European Parliament (Brussels), the Salustowicz Gallery (Bielefeld, Germany), and private collectors (in Lithuania, Germany, Finland, the USA, Austria, Italy, Norway, Turkey, France, England, Denmark, Sweden and Russia).
