Vincas Norkus was born on 2 January 1927 in the village of Gustaičiai in the Marijampolė district. After graduating from the State Art Institute of Lithuania in 1952, he became a teacher at the Vilnius S. Nėris Secondary School. He lectured at the State Art Institute of Lithuania (renamed Vilnius Academy of Art in 1990) between 1967 and 1996, and became an associate professor in 1990. Norkus participated in exhibitions from 1953, and had 23 solo exhibitions, in Vilnius, Šiauliai and Klaipėda. He was a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association from 1957, and an active member of the Plekšnė (Flounder) artists’ club. He worked for a long time at Lithuanian Television as a presenter of the television programmes for children Pieštukas burtininkas (The Wizard Pencil) and Mano pasaulis (My World), and in 1957 he compiled a book of children’s drawings. He painted landscapes, still lifes and portraits. His greatest achievement was his landscapes. Through combinations of rich contrasting colours, he expressed the individuality and romantic beauty of Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, the Curonian Spit and the Baltic coast.
His works were acquired by the Lithuanian Art Museum and the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, and by private collectors in Lithuania, the USA, Canada, Germany and Israel. Vincas Norkus died on 7 November 2006 in Vilnius.
