Augustinas Savickas (b. 1919 Copenhagen – d. 2012 Vilnius) was born in Copenhagen, where his father, the writer and diplomat Jurgis Savickis, was posted. He returned to Lithuania in 1927, studied painting at the Vilnius Art Institute between 1945 and 1949, and later became a professor there. From 1951 he was a member of the Union of Lithuanian Artists. Savickas took part in exhibitions from 1949, and held over 40 solo exhibitions in Lithuania and around the world. In 1993 he earned his doctorate in art research. He published articles about art and the monographs ‘Landscape in Lithuanian Painting’ and M.K. Čiurlionis. Savickas was a versatile artist, who drew his inspiration from Lithuanian folk art, poetry and fairy tales, nature, and daily occurrences. In 1994 he received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, in 1999 the National Prize for Culture and Art, and in 2003 the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great and the prize of the Union of Lithuanian Artists.

A painter, art historian and teacher, Augustinas Savickas was born on 12 May 1919 in Copenhagen. He was the son of the writer Jurgis Savickas. He began attending Kaunas School of Art in 1939, studied sociology at Geneva University in 1939 and 1940, and attended a school of art in Vilnius in 1940 and 1941, and a school of art in Moscow named after the 1905 Revolution. Between 1945 and 1949, he studied painting at Vilnius Art Institute under Justinas Vienožinskis and Vytautas Mackevičius. He participated in exhibitions from 1949. He worked on the Art Board of the Council of Ministers of Lithuania. From 1951 to 1972, and 1985 to 1993, he lectured on painting at the State Art Institute of Lithuania (later renamed Vilnius Academy of Art), and in 1987 he became a professor. Between 1973 and 1979, he worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences. He obtained the degree of candidate of sciences in art history in 1963, and wrote a dissertation on the landscape in Lithuanian painting (the monograph was published in 1965).
Savickas was a co-author of the book M.K. Čiurlionis (with J. Gaudrimas, 1965; the second edition appeared in 1974; and with E. Mieželaitis, in Russian, in 1971), the author of the autobiographical books ‘A Troublesome Journey’ (1977, in Russian) and ‘The Green Silence’ (2002), and a contributor to the academic publication ‘A History of 20th-Century Lithuanian Art. 1900–1940’ (1982, vol. 1; 1983, vol. 2). He published reviews of exhibitions, and had solo exhibitions in Lithuania, Russia, Armenia, Poland, Germany, the USA, Holland, Italy and Estonia. He participated in group exhibitions in Luxembourg, Belgium, Canada, Yugoslavia, France, Holland, Germany, and other countries.
Augustinas Savickas is a Meritorious Artist of Lithuania (1965), a Lithuanian Folk Artist (1979), a winner of the Lithuanian State Award (1966) and the National Prize for Culture and Art (1999), and has been decorated with the Cross of Commander of the Order of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. He died on 20 June 2012.
