Autumn dialogue by the sea

Author: Solomonas Teitelbaumas (b. 1972)

Solomonas Teitelbaumas (b. 1972 Kaunas, lives and works in Vilnius and Palanga) attended the Juozas Naujalis Art School in Kaunas, and studied painting at the Vilnius Academy of Art from 1991 to 1997, from where he gained a PhD in 2007. He attended the Summer Academy of Arts in Salzburg in 1996. He has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union since 2003. A prolific artist specialising in landscapes, he works in the tradition of Expressionism, but his paintings are characterised by a distinctive range of bright colours, emotional brushstrokes, and pronounced impasto. Teitelbaumas has held several dozen solo exhibitions in Lithuania, Austria, Holland, Sweden, Iceland, Germany, France, the USA, China, and elsewhere. In 1995 he received a Viktoras Vizgirda Diploma and a prize for continuing the traditions of the Lithuanian artists’ group Ars (which was active in Kaunas between 1932 and 1935), and in 2012 he won an honorary diploma in the Antanas Gudaitis Painting Competition.

The painter Solomonas Teitelbaumas was born on 10 July 1972 in Kaunas, and attended the J. Naujalis Secondary School of Art. He studied at Vilnius Academy of Art between 1991 and 1997, and returned to pursue his MA and doctoral studies from 2004 to 2007. In 1996 he studied at the Summer Academy of Fine Arts at Salzburg in Austria. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1997, and joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 2003. He was awarded the Viktoras Vizgirda Prize in 1995 for continuing the Ars group traditions. Teitelbaumas’ work has been shown in group exhibitions in Austria, Belarus, the USA, Iceland, China, Holland, Russia, Finland, Sweden and Germany. He has held 16 solo exhibitions of his work in Lithuania, and six abroad (France, the USA, Russia and Germany).
Teitelbaumas is one of the most talented artists of his generation. He continues the 20th-century Ars group painting tradition, and the tradition of the Paris school of Jewish artists (such as Soutine, Kikoine, Kremegne) who were born in the historic lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The meaning of his pictures hinges on the manner of painting and the understanding of painting, his state of mind, and his inner tension, instead of on the representation of the subject matter. His works cover the drama of Jewish history, alongside the subjective emotional development of 20th-century human psychology. Teitelbaumas skilfully exploits the power of the emotional mesmerism of colour, light and brushstrokes in his paintings, whether they are portraits, still lifes, coastal nature or Vilnius’ Old Town.
