The painter Leonardas Tuleikis was born on 25 January 1939 in the village of Babrungėnai in the Plungė district. He attended a fine art school in Telšiai between 1952 and 1957, and studied painting at the State Art Institute of Lithuania between 1957 and 1963. He has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association since 1966, he was elected chairman of the Painters’ Section in 1969. In 1975 and 1976 he went on an internship in Italy. He has held personal exhibitions in Vilnius (1974, 1985, 1989, 1999, 2004) and Bydgoszcz in Poland (1972). Tuleikis has taken part in Baltic States triennials and in exhibitions of the Individualists’ Group and exhibitions of Samogitian art. His pictures have been shown in Great Britain, Estonia, Italy, Japan, the USA, Georgia, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Germany. In 1972, Tuleikis won a prize at an exhibition of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian painting, and in 1978 he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist of Lithuania.
Works by Tuleikis are held by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Art Museum in St Petersburg, and art galleries in Tbilisi and Riga. Many of his works have been acquired by Lithuanian and foreign art collectors.
