The painter Gražina Vitartaitė was born on 3 October 1942 in Krekenava, in the Panevėžys district. She went to secondary school in Kaunas, and studied monumental art studies at the State Art Institute of Lithuania. She joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1967. Between 1971 and 1989 she lectured in the Painting Department of the State Art Institute of Lithuania, became an associate professor (1986), and then head of the department (1980 to 1989). She worked as a lecturer at the Design College from 1997 to 2000, and became its director. She has held about 40 solo exhibitions of her work. Her exhibitions have been held in Lithuania in the galleries of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association (1973, 1990, 2006, 2007), in the Vilnius ir dailė (Vilnius and Art) gallery (2000, 2008), in the Palace of Fine Art Exhibitions (1983), in the Seimas (Parliament, 2001, 2007), in Vilnius Town Hall (2001), in the Lithuanian Government Palace (2001, 2011), in the Panevėžys J. Miltinis Drama Theatre (2006–2007), in the Jurbarkas Regional Museum (2008), and in the Juodkrantė branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum (2011). Her works have been shown in France, Germany (Days of Lithuanian Culture, 1994), Lübeck (1998), Hamburg (2005) and the Lithuanian embassy in Belarus (2001). She has participated in group exhibitions in Lithuania (the 13th Dialogai International Painting Triennial in Vilnius, 2007), and abroad, in Chicago (1995), the United Arab Emirates (1996). She has also participated in travelling exhibitions in Finland, Poland and Italy (2007–2008), and in an exhibition of work by ten Lithuanian painters in Austria, the Netherlands and Germany (2008). Vitartaitė is a Meritorious Artist of Lithuania (1984). She has been awarded numerous prizes, diplomas and medals by the Ministry of Culture and the Lithuanian Artists’ Association.
