Kazimieras Žoromskis, a painter and teacher, was born on 4 March 1913 in Smilgiai in the Panevėžys district. He graduated from Vilnius Art Academy in 1942, and from Vienna Art Academy in 1945. He studied at Rome Art Academy from 1945 to 1946. Between 1943 and 1986 he lived and worked as a teacher in Austria, Italy, Spain, Colombia and the US A. He returned to Lithuania in 1986. Žoromskis’ early works have the characteristics of realistic drawing, and display an original representation of space, light and colour. The work from his American period is distinguished by its stylistic variety: Abstract Expressionism and classic abstraction, a distinctive variety of optical art (the illusion of light and space is created by the use of the principles of spectrum analysis) and clear features of verism. He joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association in 1986. H e held 27 personal exhibitions, in Madrid (1947, 1948, 1949), Bogota (1950), Chicago (1954), Detroit (1964), New Jersey (1970), New Haven (1972), Easton (1977), New York (1967 to 1982), Paris (1984), Vilnius (1983, 1988, 1993), and elsewhere. Žoromskis’ achievements were recognised by various Lithuanian awards. He died on 14 April 2004 in Vilnius.
