A side street in Vilnius

Author: Adolf Poplawski (1907–1982)

The graphic artist and painter Adolf Popławski (1907–1982) was raised in a family of Vilnius intellectuals. He studied at the Sigismund Augustus Gymnasium, and the Art Department of Stephen Báthory University. He participated actively in artistic life in Vilnius, and was a member of the Vilnius Group, the St Luke Society and the Vilnius Art Sponsorship Society. He joined the Polish resistance movement Armia Krajowa during the Second World War, and because of this he was deported to Siberia by the Soviets in 1945 and held prisoner in the Vorkuta and Kolyma camps. In 1956, after Stalin had died, he repatriated to Poland, and lived in Gdynia. He worked as a teacher, and wrote his memoirs 12 Lat Łagru (Twelve Years in a Labour Camp).
