Author: Elias Grossman (1898–1947)

Elias Mandel Grossman (b. 1898 Kobrin, Belarus – d. 1947 New York) came from a small shtetl near Białystok, the Grossman family emigrated to the United States in search of a better life, and settled in Brooklyn. Elias Mandel Grossman studied at the Education Union School of Art, and then at the Art Students League of New York. The 22-year-old artist made a name for himself with his engravings, especially captivating portraits, and American cityscapes. He began to take part in exhibitions in 1920, and became a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists. In 1927, Grossman travelled to Italy, and was invited to paint a portrait of Benito Mussolini at his villa in Rome. He made portraits of Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, and many other famous people. He travelled in Europe, Egypt and Palestine until 1940, including a visit to Vilnius in 1931. In 1937, he published the book of etchings An Etcher’s Intimate Album. His work was awarded a prize by the Washington Art Museum.

Elias Mandel Grossman (1898–1947) was born into a poor Jewish family in the town of Kobryn, now in Belarus. When he was 13, he left Imperial Russia with his parents, and went to live in the USA . He was a member of the Art Students League of New York. He became famous for his etchings and lithographs, was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, and his book of engravings An Etcher’s Intimate Album was published in 1937. He held exhibitions of his work in New York between 1938 and 1944. He portrayed the Jewish quarter on the Lower East Side of New York, and between the wars he travelled to Europe, and made engravings of towns. He also visited Poland and Vilnius.
