Atlas or A Geographicke description... ("Atlas Sive Cosmographiae..." title-page engraving)

Author: Gerard Mercator (1512–1594)

Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594), a Flemish geographer, map-maker and mathematician, created and issued quite a number of original maps: those of the world discovered by then, of separate continents and of separate countries. His created cartographic model, the Mercator projection, is still in use. G. Mercator studied and worked in Flanders, but in 1544 he was charged with heresy and put under arrest. When let free, he moved to Duisburg, Germany.
Along with his other contributions to cartography, G. Mercator was the author of the first map of Lithuania. During the years 1595–1634, his map Lithvania was published 20 times in 5 languages in the atlases produced by his successors and with his name inscribed. Smaller-size versions of the same map (about 20 issues) were also published.
