Adomas Jacovskis (b. 1948 Vilnius) grew up in Soviet Lithuania in a family of three children, all of whom became artists. Between 1966 and 1973, he studied at the Vilnius Art Institute, where one of his teachers was Augustinas Savickas. From 1978 to 1993 he worked as art director at the State Youth Theatre. He has been teaching at the Vilnius Academy of Art since 1989, and is now a professor. A member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union, he regularly takes part in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. He has designed the scenery for over 80 drama, opera and ballet productions in all the major theatres in Vilnius and Kaunas, as well as in theatres in Reykjavik, Riga, Moscow, Beijing, Gothenburg, and elsewhere. He paints exclusively portraits and metaphorical figurative compositions. He is the recipient of many prizes, including the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas and the Kristoforas prize (twice). In 2000 he was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize.
