"Atlas Universel" title-page engraving
Author: | Robert de Vaugondy’s family (XVIII c.) |
Robert de Vaugondy’s family inherited the property of the Sansons, the famous 17th century French cartographers, together with their collected cartographic information, moulds and printing plates. The de Vaugondys were mostly engaged in reissuing N. Sanson’s maps and atlases, but their issued Atlas universel (1757–1793) and a smaller-format Atlas portatif (1748–1813) were their original works in which they creatively adapted the first-hand accounts of travellers in the works of ancient cartographers. R. de Vaugondy made a new smaller original map of the GDL based on the information taken from N. Sanson’s five maps of the GDL and Samogitia.
