Author: Herman Moll (1654–1732)

Herman Moll (1654–1732) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher. In 1678 he moved to London where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt. Later, he started his own business as a map publisher and opened a book and map store in London. His works had a high reputation and were much copied by other publishers. H. Moll made friends with some rather interesting people, and these included explorers-buccaneers William Dampier and Woodes Rogers, and the scientist Robert Hooke. H. Moll’s maps were used as illustrations in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.
