Author: | John Senex (ca 1678–1740) |
John Senex (c. 1678–1740), one of the major English cartographers of the first part of the 18th century, first became famous as an engraver. About 1710 he began to prepare a folio atlas with the layout of maps on two sheets joined. The only drawback of the atlas was that over the time its threefold sheets became worn and prone to tearing, and therefore it is now difficult to find any map of that atlas in good condition. At that time atlases with two-sheet maps were popular despite their being unwieldy. In 1728, for his contribution to specialist scientific journals, J. Senex was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and became the first English cartographer to be so honoured.
