Nikol Schattenstein (b. 1877 Kaunas – d. 1954 Port Chester, USA) spent his childhood in the Panemunė district of Kaunas. Studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Art from 1893 to 1996, and 1899 to 1902, and held his first solo exhibition in Vienna in 1903. He went to Berlin for a short while in 1906, but later returned to Vienna. The artist made a name for himself with his realistic portraits and won many prestigious commissions. He painted genre scenes and female nudes. Schattenstein served as a military artist at the headquarters of the Austrian army between 1915 and 1917. In 1918 he was sent to paint participants in the Brest-Litovsk Peace Conference. After the First World War he settled in Rome, and in 1920 he emigrated to the United States. He held solo exhibitions at the Rosenbach Gallery in Philadelphia in 1926, 1930 and 1934, and his works were exhibited at the famous Duveen-Graham, Schoneman, and French & Co galleries in New York. The artist received various prizes at international exhibitions, and won the Grand Prix de Rome twice.
