Jakob Szer (b. 1890 Vilnius – d. 1944 Vaivara concentration camp, Estonia) studied at the Vilnius School of Drawing and the Higher School of Art, which came under the auspices of the Vilnius Art Society. From 1911 he was a member of the Vilnius Society of Artists and took part in its exhibitions, and also participated in the activities of the Jung Vilne (Young Vilnius) group of writers and artists. He worked as a drawing teacher at the Jewish Gymnasium of Exact Sciences in Vilnius. In 1923, he made a set of puppets representing famous writers, artists and public figures, and put on mini-performances with them. Szer held his first solo exhibition in 1931, showing over 150 paintings, watercolours, pastels, drawings and cartoons. He travelled around Europe in the 1920s. On returning to Vilnius from Switzerland in 1940, Szer planned to organise the exhibition ‘From the Jewish Ghetto to the Alps’ but was imprisoned by the Nazis in the Vilnius ghetto. He took part in an exhibition in the ghetto in 1943, and created scenery for a ghetto drama production based on David Pinski’s tragedy The Eternal Jew.
