The painter and restorer Ignacy Klukowski was born on 30 May 1908 in Latavėnų village (now in Anykščių region). He grew up in the Ukraine and settled down in Vilnius in 1919, where he finished gymnasium in 1925. He acquired the basics of art from the daughter of the painter and photographer Stanisław Filibert Fleury, Wacława Fleury, who was a drawer and a pedagogue. Between 1925 and 1927 he attended drawing courses of the Vilnius Artists’ Society. In 1927 he began to attend lectures at the Arts Department of the Stephen Báthory University as an external student: he learnt painting from Ludomir Sleńdziński and Ferdynand Ruszczyc, drawing from Benedykt Kubicki and artistic photography from Jan Bułhak. He participated in the activities of the Guild of St Luke. In 1932 he left for Paris and studied at the national higher school of arts École des Beaux Arts until 1937. After his studies he returned to Vilnius and remained to live there and create art to the end of the war. He repatriated to Poland in 1945 and worked as a restorer of paintings at the restoration workshop in Gdańsk until 1975. He died on 19 April 1978 in Gdańsk.
Ignacy Klukowski painted portraits, townscapes and landscapes, and in particular he liked the genre of marine art. He began to participate in exhibitions during the period of his studies in Paris. He displayed his works in Polish art exhibitions in Paris, in 1939 and 1940 participated in exhibitions in Vilnius, and after the war he was a participant in numerous exhibitions in Poland. He held his solo exhibitions in Gdańsk in 1946, 1969 and 1974. Klukowski became a member of the Polish Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts ‘Zachęta’ in 1937, took part in the activities of the art sponsorship society of Vilnius Wileńskie Towarzystwo Szerzenia Kultury Sztuk Plastycznych, and in 1949 he joined the Union of Polish Artists.
