Ben Shahn‘s (Benjamin Hirsch San) (b. 1898 Kaunas – d. 1969 New York) father was exiled to Siberia in 1905 on account of his socialist views, and the child spent a lot of time studying the Torah with his grandfather, who worked as a teacher in the Ukmergė cheder. His father managed to leave for America, and in 1906 the whole family moved from Lithuania to Brooklyn. From 1919 to 1922, Shahn studied at New York University and the City College of New York, and later attended the National Academy of Design. He travelled in Europe and Africa between 1924 and 1929. He had his first solo exhibition at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1930, and in 1932 his work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Shahn became one of the leading artists depicting social and political themes. He taught at the universities of Colorado, Pennsylvania and Harvard, became a professor, and wrote books. He received numerous awards, including the medal of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) in 1958.
