Ber Zalkind (b. 1878 Vilnius – d. 1944 Bukhara) studied at the Vilnius School of Drawing in 1903 and 1904. As a founder and head of the Vilnius Art Society, which was active between 1909 and 1915, he took part in all its annual spring exhibitions. During his term of office, the society organised the popular public events and themed parties ‘Paris Inn’, ‘Stray Dog in Montmartre’, ‘Hell’, and others. In 1912 he participated in cabaret together with Antanas Žmuidzinavičius and Ivan Rybakov. Zalkind worked as a drawing teacher in a Jewish school and as an art critic for the newspaper Vilner Tog (Vilnius Day). He also contributed articles on art theory to the Warsaw magazine Literarishe Bleter (Literary Pages). In 1913 he studied in Paris. He was a painter of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscapes and genre scenes. Later, features of Cubism and Expressionism appeared in his work. In 1928 he published the set of postcards ‘The Vilnius Jewish Ghetto’.
