Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, ‘Vilnius from its Foundation to 1750’, vol. III, 1841.

Kraszewski’s book ‘Vilnius from its Foundation to 1750’ was illustrated by Józef Oziębłowski (1805–1878). He had studied art and mathematics at Vilnius University in the early 1830s, and acquired a printing press which operated in Vilnius for 30 years. Oziębłowski printed around 700 lithographs, by himself and by other artists. The style of his graphic work is characterised by the slightly naïve perspective and the soft modelling of the tones. The second volume covers Catholic Vilnius, and the third covers Orthodox and other confessions (Tartars, Jews and Karaites), bearing witness to the multicultural character of the city and the diversity of religions. It is accompanied by a lithograph by Oziębłowski showing a Tartar mosque surrounded by a Muslim cemetery in the suburb of Lukiškės on the banks of the River Neris.
