The Old Town of Vilnius has always been open: passers-by could go everywhere, through the maze of chaotic streets, lanes, yards, gateways and arches, which seemed mysterious and closed to newcomers. That was also what it was like in the Soviet period; unlike nowadays, when yards in renovated quarters are being privatised and locked, and inaccessible. Thus, the charm of the Old Town, its unexpected courtyards and passages, its mazes, routes and pathways known to residents, is disappearing. But they remain in Repšys’ series Vilnius, like the chaotic courtyard of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, with its web of pipes, outhouses, porches and wires.
