In Repšys’ pictures, the Old Town is not beautified or restored: the buildings are dilapidated and falling down, the walls are decaying, with bricks falling out, crumbling plaster and broken tiles. The houses on Totorių and Vingrių streets are missing walls, and the discernible remnants of rooms, with gaping unglazed windows, recall the bombardments, although several decades have passed since the Second World War. There are abandoned yards on Pilies and Pylimo streets, with rotting wooden galleries and ramshackle staircases. There are no people in Repšys’ etchings, but their dwellings exude the impression of an impoverished and miserable life.
