This landscape illustrates Skudutis’ opposition to the decision of the older generation of artists to create pretty and romantic pictures. The prominent grey and misshapen branches of fruit trees, the black and slushy ground in the springtime, the grim colours and the neglected, forgotten garden appeal to him. But the sky, painted emotionally, colourfully and with love, is a symbol of cheerful hope. Skudutis painted this picture at about the same time that Algimantas Kuras painted his Old objects in nature. The expression of nostalgia for the past and the fruit-bearing garden are similar.
