Valentinas Antanavičius (b. 1936), the patriarch of Lithuanian assemblage, uses various ugly objects to express his visions: sticks, pieces of old toys, pieces of bleached plastic, torn netting, and the remains of baskets. But his admiration of a sight that he has nurtured in his mind is so strong that even a selection of rubbish integrated into a painted background manages to produce an image of an elegant and slightly eccentric lady, if not exactly a Classical beauty. Text author Giedrė Jankevičiūtė
