The technique of pastel was his favourite since it enabled him to produce airy, ephemeral forms and the impressive effects of light resulting from the various states of nature and full of a mysterious glow. He did not avoid the symbolists’ favourite theme of death, saturated with sadness, the terrifying uncertainty and the longing for the spiritual world: all this is felt in his picture, A tomb among the trees.
