The techniques of collage and assemblage so loved by Soviet Modernism and Valentinas Antanavičius (b. 1936) are a typical invention of early-20th century Western Modernism, which forced artists and critics to reconsider the concept of the still-life genre. However, no agreement was reached on whether Modernism, which has turned objects into a means of artistic expression, has expanded the concept of the still-life, or whether the artistic strategy should be associated with the development of the still-life. At any rate, the assemblage again makes us ask what the still-life represents. Hence, Antanavičius’ work expressly shows the relationship between Modernist artists in Soviet Lithuania and objects, and their attitude towards the aims of creative work.
