In this picture, the sunny midday heat alternates with deep cool shadows and the melancholy of the approaching evening. Paukštė’s spontaneous figure painting may be linked to both the tradition of Lithuanian Expressionism and the European ‘flash painting’, or transavantgarde phenomenon. At the same time, the artist succeeds in creating a very original world of images. In his scenarios, the melancholic trend merges gaily into an alloy of expressive shapes and colours, and stability.
