Vilnius in the Year of War 1916’.
Buhe made a drawing of the interior of Sztrall’s Coffee House (at 2 Didžioji St, now 26 Pilies St). Army officers, nurses and wealthy customers sit at tables, reading newspapers and conversing. Before the First World War, Sztrall’s Coffee House was famous for its pastries and confectionery, but during the war the ingredients for baking pastries were not available. The Germans noticed that people in Vilnius preferred tea to coffee. Sztrall’s Coffee House was particularly favoured by the more refined army officers, for it put on music in the afternoons. A poster on the wall warns against the danger of spies: during the First World War, the authorities were obsessed about the threat of spying.
