Zbigniew Kaliszczak (1903–1985) came from Rohatyn (Ukraine), and studied in the Art Department at Stephen Báthory University in Vilnius between 1923 and 1928. Later, he perfected his skills at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig, and worked for printing presses in Radom and Ostrowiec in Poland. After the Second World War, he settled in Gdańsk. During his study years in Vilnius, he participated in the academic life of the artistic community, and contributed to the magazine Alma Mater Vilnensis, becoming its art editor in 1926. Like all the younger generation of art graduates from Stephen Báthory University, Kaliszczak aspired to taking an innovative and unconventional view of the old city. During the last year of his studies, he produced the series Wilno w ebonicie (Vilnius in Ebonite), for which he used ebonite, a modern material made from vulcanised rubber that is used in industry for producing gramophone records and household appliances.
