Przegłąd Augustowski. Album malowniczy guberni augustowskiej, Rok II, Warszawa, 1856.

Little is known about Alojzy Miserowicz (1825–ca. 1905): different sources provide different variations on the spelling of his surname (he himself signed his name Mizierowicz and Misurowicz), and his first name is sometimes indicated as Alexander. It is known that he worked with the lithography workshop of Maksymilian Fajans (18271890) in Warsaw. This artist and draughtsman was best known for making lithographs of Napoleon Orda’s drawings of scenes in Poland and Lithuania, printed by Fajans. However, the artist also made lithographs of his own drawings. In 18511858, while working as a drawing teacher at a gymnasium in Suvalkai, he drew and lithographed views of the surroundings. His first series of lithographs was published in 1855, entitled Przegłąd Augustowski. Album malowniczy guberni augustowskiej (An Overview of Augustavas. A Painterly Album of the Augustavas Province). A second series of the lithographs was printed in the autumn of 1856, including a lithograph of Aleksotas Bridge.
The subject is not only picturesque, but also has a historical importance: Aleksotas Bridge connected Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland, both of which were occupied by Russia. In 1831, rebel forces descended from the hills around Aleksotas and occupied Kaunas. Later, in around 1856, the bridge became a popular place for political demonstrations.
The lithograph catches a superb panoramic view, with Kaunas sprawling in the valley, the mood of a peaceful summer’s day skilfully rendered, and flocks of people strolling towards the city.
This lithograph was included along with several other works by Misurowicz in Augustavo albumas (The Augustavas Album), printed in Vilnius in 1857 at Józef Zawadzki’s printing press.
