This picture was painted after a major turning point in the artist’s life, the 1972 Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian painting biennial, in which constructional pictures of Vilnius by V. Kisarauskas, and expressive compositions with brave distortions by S. Džiaukštas, were shown. This encouraged Katinas to turn to structured compositions and a harmony of large coloured areas, and to use the contrast to achieve expressiveness by highlighting the red centre. The picture shows the artist’s evident inclination towards geometric shapes. The rural view is only a pretext to create an expressive and abstracted composition.
